Dear Kostas:
When we make our dives (1951) the wreck was buoyed but had not yet been salvaged.
We had only single SCUBA tanks with 720 PSI and no computers; so our dives were very short.
The inside of the bridge was carpeted with mollusks, engine telegraphs, helm and all other equipment still intact.
Aft of the stack was an antiaircraft gun at the base of which we found a single human bone, a tibia,
On the rail a machine gun could still be turned on its mount. I dove to the bottom just once and seem to recall the depth at 230ft.
Our girl diver, Susy Phipps, had nitrogen narcosis and was rescued by her companion, John Cochran.
They ultimately married. At the naval ministry in Piraeus I was told that the captain had been mortally wounded by Stuka
fire when he was on the bridge of the ship. In the arms of his first mate he called out,
"See now men of Greece how a Greek captain dies". That is all I can recall.
Good luck with your research,
Stan Waterman
